    Principal Letter

     

    Hello Mercer Families,

     

    There was communication sent home last Friday from SPS communications intended for Mercer families, but addressed to Denny families. This was an error. However, the content of the letter was accurate in regards to a disturbing incident involving a substitute instructional assistant. I attached the letter sent by SPS to the email that carried this February newsletter. The alleged incident DID NOT occur at Mercer. The instructional assistant did work, without incident, as a substitute at Mercer this past October and November. Please review the letter sent to you from Seattle Public Schools for more information. If you have more questions please contact our district communication department.

    Thank you to all of Mercer families that were able to attend our screening of Screenagers, our Winter Concert, and our recent Expert Expo.  First semester ended last Wednesday, January 31st. Our first day of second semester began Thursday, February 1. First semester report cards will be sent home February 12-14.

     

    ABC/Tardy Dance and Activity

    Our first semester ABC/Tardy Dance & Activity is Thursday, February 15. We want all students to participate, but students must meet our requirements. Students must be in good academic standing (A, B, and C grades), and meet our on-time to class requirement of no more than 3 tardies between January 22-February 15. The dance and activities begin at 2:00 pm and go until the end of the school day.

     

    Spirit week is February 12-15.

    This is an opportunity for students to have some fun by dressing up:

    Monday:              Pajama Day

    Tuesday:              Hat Day

    Wednesday:       Superhero Day

    Thursday:            Neon Color Day

    Friday:                 No School (Conference Waiver Day)

     

    Student Led Conferences: No School Friday, February 16

    The week of February 12-16 are Semester 1 Student Led Conferences. Details are on page 2 of this newsletter. Students are preparing to share with you their progress from first semester. These conferences will take place outside of school using Schoology and student portfolios.

    Student Led Conferences: Feb. 12-16

    Part of preparing students for success in high school and beyond is making sure our students demonstrate understanding and ownership of their learning. In February, our students will be spending time reflecting on their semester 1 progress and sharing their successes and areas for growth during our student led conference week.

    Top 5 pieces of information to know about our upcoming conferences:

    1. Conferences are student led. This means conferences will be held with, families, at home following a process we are preparing and teaching our students.

    2. We are using the Schoology technology platform to share academic and behavior information with you. Students are currently using Schoology to prepare their academic portfolio for semester

    3. Conferences will count as part of your student’s grade for Social Studies class. The conference process connects to many important learning standards expected of middle school students as they progress toward college and career readiness. For example, students will be: developing questions and planning inquiries, evaluating sources and using evidence, and communicating conclusions and taking informed action.

    4. Families are expected to complete and return an Exit Ticket to his/her Social Studies teacher at the conclusion of your student led conference.

    5. There is no school on Friday, February 16 so that our staff can meet with invited families and students.

    What can parents & guardians be doing now in preparation for student conferences?

    • Check the Source frequently to monitor academic and attendance information.
    • Talk with your student about their progress, using the A, B, C indicators of middle school success (see below).
    • Review the conference Exit Ticket and other information that will be on our website and sent home about student led conferences.
    • Check out what is expected learning for students in your student's grade level across subject areas at the State of Washington OSPI Learning & Teaching website.

    A, B, C indicators of success used at Mercer, used during Student Led Conference:

    • Key Indicator #1: Attendance
      • Have students missed 5 days or less during semester 1? If the answer is yes, GREAT. If students have missed 5 days or more during semester 1 then this is an area for improvement.
    • Key Indicator #2: Behavior
      • Does my student have any behavior referrals that have led to loss of instructional time? If the answer is no or perhaps just once then GREAT. If the answer is more than one, then this is an area for improvement.
    • Key Indicator #3: Coursework
      • Does my student have grades of C or higher? Do my student’s test scores reflect 80% or higher? If the answer is yes, GREAT. If no, is your student re-taking tests and/or quizzes to demonstrate meeting standard? Are there missing assignments?

    Important Reminders

    After School Activities, Session #2 Begins March 5

    Session #2 begins Monday, March 5. Please visit our website to get registration information and to see what activities and opportunities are offered. 

    Morning and Afternoon Procedures and Expectations

    Our campus officially opens at 8:15am. This is the time when we have staff on duty for the supervision of students. Students should not be arriving to school before 8:15 am. Upon arrival before 8:25 am, students are expected to report to the cafeteria. Hallways and lockers are closed until our 8:25 am dismissal from the cafeteria.

    Similarly, students are expected to be picked up and off school grounds 10 minutes after our dismissal bell. If students are waiting for rides, students are expected to wait near the parking lot outside of our south A building.

    We are seeing an increase of students “hanging out” after school without supervision. Unless your student is in an after-school activity with an adult he/she cannot be on campus. Please review your families’ afternoon plan.


    We would love to have students stay after school as part of our after-school activities beginning March 5!
