    Dear Mercer Families,

I want to take time today to acknowledge the impact of recent events on our community and affirm as a school community we believe Black Lives Matter.

These ongoing events cause tremendous trauma, fear, grief and anger for so many in our community. As a school leader, staff and community we want to say to our Black students and families - we see you. We hear you. And we stand in love and solidarity with you.

School is often a place where students can turn when they need to make sense of the events of the world. At the same time, I want to acknowledge for many students and families school is also a place that has perpetuated the trauma of systematic racism and white supremacy. At Mercer, we are committed to doing the anti-racist work necessary to create a school community where all students, and in particular our students of color who have been marginalized, discriminated against and silenced can feel safe, empowered and welcome.

Our staff wishes we could be physically together on campus with one another and our students. We want to authentically engage in conversations about what is happening in our city, our nation and our world. We want to embrace and uplift our students of color and create space for them to be seen and heard. We want to take action with our students to create a more equitable and anti-racist world.

While we can't physically gather during this time, please know our school leaders, teachers and staff are here for our students and families. Please let us know how we can support you through this time

    With deep care,
    Cindy Watters, Principal
